Tower Crane Training Equipment Donation

• The Hebron Project, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Operating Engineers (OE) College (Local 904) have been working together to support and implement a program that allows journeyperson mobile crane operators to become qualified as journeyperson tower crane operators. It also provides opportunities for apprentice mobile crane operators to become qualified as apprentice tower crane operators.
• The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and the OE College committed funding for this training program, including a tower crane simulator and other program costs. More information can be found at www.releases.gov.nl.ca/releases/2012/aes/0918n09.htm.
• The Hebron Project has provided a fully-operational tower crane for training purposes. The Project has donated the crane to the college to allow for future training needs, beyond those of the Hebron Project.
• This initiative has been established to address a shortage of tower crane operators in the province. With the available pool of qualified tower crane operators in Newfoundland and Labrador already exhausted, the program will create an additional pool of Newfoundland and Labrador residents to recruit from to help meet project labour needs. This will help to maximize employment and training of local residents, and will also contribute to the Project's legacy of education and training in building capacity for Hebron and future projects.
• The specifications for the Potain MD125B tower crane include:
  • Maximum Load = 6 tonnes at 6.16 metre radius
  • Maximum hook height = 80 feet (24m)
  • Jib length = 140 feet (43m)
• The Hebron Project has a total of six tower cranes at the Bull Arm construction site. Five tower cranes directly support the construction of the GBS and the sixth supports material handling.
